The research and development activities are based in the departments. There are, however, also interdepartmental and interfaculty teams which to work on projects closely related to the fields offered in the Ph.D. study programmes at the Faculties of Applied Sciences, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering.

In recent years there has been a considerable increase in the research activities of the Faculty of Education and the three new faculties established in the last ten years - Faculty of Economics, Law and Philosophy and Arts.

Research and development focuces on three types of activities:

  • research, aimed at obtaining knowledge of basic phenomena and observable facts
  • applied research, directed towards a specific and practical goals
  • experimental development, which employs existing knowledge obtained through research or based on experience

UWB research and development activities are organized by the Office of the Vice-Rector for Strategy and Research. At faculty level these activities are the responsibility of the Vice-Deans for Research and Development.

Students of the technical faculties FAV, FEL, and FST are invited to apply for the Annual Emil Skoda Award in the categories by submitting a Diploma or Ph.D. dissertation. This is one of the contract's articles regarding cooperation between the University of West Bohemia and the SKODA HOLDING, a.s.

Since 1996, the University of West Bohemia has operated the Science and Technology Park (Vedeckotechnicky park) within its research activities and in accordance with the contract on mutual cooperation entered into with the Business Innovation Centre (BIC) Plzen Company.

Its participation in the Plzen Science and Technology Park (Plzensky vedecko technologicky park) project is another significant activity. The implementation of the project was entrusted to the new joint-stock company Vedeckotechnicky park Plzen, a. s., in which the University of West Bohemia and BIC Plzen are associates.

The Research Centre of rail vehicles was recently established. The Research Centre's project was founded on the basis of announcement of the Programme of Research and Development called Research Centres. The project was announced by respective bodies of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports in the CR. On the basis of the project's approval, the Research Centre was established as an independent department at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering from January 1, 2005.

In order to facilitate international project cooperation in science and research the Regional Contact Organization in West Bohemia was founded by UWB, BIC and SKODA Research Ltd. The activities of this organization are supported by the EUPRO Programme of the MSMT.

Offers of research and development activities are included in "University of West Bohemia - Your Partner" publication.

In cooperation with the city of Pilsen Days of Science and Engineering in Pilsen are organised annually. The aim of the event is to draw the public's attention to the field of science and engineering and stir the interest of young people in studying at the engineering faculties.
