Abstrakt EN: The GOCE satellite mission provides among other products (1) preprocessed gravity gradients in the gradiometer reference frame as well as (2) global gravity field models in terms of spherical harmonic coefficients. The latter are a best fitting representation of the original observations on global scale. They may, however, not necessarily be best fitting the data on regional scales. A globally best fitting regularization, e.g., might damp small but significant portions of the signal in specific regions with rough gravity signal. In such a case, those signal portions should be visible in the residuals between the original observations and observations reconstructed from a global model. Based on a set of simulations to validate our analysis strategy, we present results from a test area over the Himalaya. This gives indications on whether or not the residuals with respect to the chosen global model in the study area can be expected to contain valuable signal. This provides an important indication for both, regional and global modellers one the quality on the global processing as well as on the worth of replacing existing global gravity field models by a regional inversion of the original gradient observations.
